Basic Facts About Flood Insurance

August 30, 2017

In light of recent events, flood insurance has been at the forefront of many minds here at BHS Insurance.

While hurricane season very rarely impacts our West Michigan weather systems, we don’t necessarily forego the related inclement weather devastation.

Flooding can occur during any season in Michigan. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) estimates that 90% of all natural disasters involve flooding.

Flood Insurance 101:

  • Flood damage is excluded in nearly all homeowners and renter’s insurance policies, but it can be purchased as a separate policy.
  • You don’t need to live in a flood plane to purchase flood insurance.
  • Everyone lives in a flood zone. The question is whether it is high-risk or moderate-to low-risk zone.
  • The federal government sets the premium rates and the costs do not vary; therefore, there is no need to shop for rates (Note: This is only if you are in a NFIP zone. Find out all the communities participating the in NFIP here.)
