Q: How does my child going to college affect my insurance?

Answer:

Q: My son is heading off to college in the fall. How will this impact my insurance?

A: There are several possible areas of impact when you have a student in college.

  1. AUTO INSURANCE: Some carriers will discount your auto policy if your student is more than 100 miles away from home and without a vehicle. If your student has a vehicle with them, the carrier may require to have the student’s address on file.
  2. HOME INSURANCE: Most home policies will extend coverage for your child’s personal belongings up to 10% of the policy personal property limits and liability. However, if your child lives in an apartment while attending college, some apartment complexes ask to be listed as an additional interest. If so, we can look at a separate tenant policy for the student
  3. LAPTOP/COMPUTER: Does your student need coverage for their laptop/computer? We may want to schedule this for them.
  4. LIFE INSURANCE: If your child has taken out student loans, life insurance may be a discussion point. The following article may be of interest: What Happens to Student Loans When You Die?
