When you are driving your vehicle for personal use and the Uber or Lyft app is off, your personal auto policy covers you. When the app makes a passenger match and you drive to pick up the passenger or while the passenger is in the vehicle, the coverage provided by Uber or Lyft applies.
The gray area that you should be concerned about is when the gap occurs; This is when the app is on but you don’t have a passenger or passenger match. You are running an errand with the app on looking for passengers. You get in an accident but don’t have a passenger or match. Neither your personal auto policy nor the Uber or Lyft coverage applies.
There are currently very few companies that offer a ride share endorsement to cover this gap.
